Why are online recipes so annoying? You need to scroll through a personal memoir, avoid pop-ups, and mute auto-playing videos before finally arriving at the recipe. Sure, there's a "jump to recipe" button, but that usually jumps to another advertisement before getting to the main content. Why? In this video, Sabrina proposes a solution to fix recipe websites while Melissa recruits a team of expert chefs and recipe developers to claim that nothing is wrong in the first place. My family also told me it's a good idea to cut the tip off both side of the bag, so that when liquid escapes one side, air can enter the other side, and it reduces the risk of spillage.
Mad respect to anybody who could memorize and publicly recite pi beyond the Feynman Point (position 761), which is where that esteemed physicist would have concluded by saying "nine nine nine nine nine nine, and so on." And it's delightfully irrational to do this beyond about position 45, because that's enough precision to calculate the circumference of the observable universe and have the resulting margin of error be smaller than a proton.
Lol, I was just looking at a spinach lasagna recipe, realised I don't have enough besciamella, decided to just do some pasta and looked for something to put on whole I cook... and yes the one ricotta and spinach lasagna that seemed like what I wanted was buried under half a Russian novel worth of the guys family life and sleeping habits. Cheese!
I think of it like I'm my girlfriend's companion and she can hand me her things like I'm a skyrim character. I am sworn to carry her burdens
I always fugured the pants producing plants were pike: make womens pockets smaller. They earn less so they have less stuff and they don't complain. Then we safe some fabric, and we pocket the difference
I wouldn't dream of buying trousers without pockets large enough to hold my phone, wallet, and keys. Some of the only clothes I've taken back for refund are trousers with insufficient pockets, as I had forgot to check. I wonder if other men are the same and if this is the reason all trousers marketed to men have large pockets.
The biggest thing I learned watching this video is that I pronounce "been" as "bin"... and I'm not sure if I'm wrong, or her. :-)
I don't like gambling and I don't like trinkets. I think most blind boxes are over priced. I am definitely not the ideal customer at all for these things.
If the "instructions" aren't good enough to go over how to prepare the recipe, its a shit recipe. I don't mind the spam fluff on recipes, as long the *recipe* is first, and then the yapping afterwards, a bullet point list of useful tips isn't fluff/yapping, those are really nice.
I drink yogurt in a bag. I have not seen in my entire life a yogurt box. Do they even exist? I do not know.
The reason the yapping gpes before the recipe is because the writer KNOWS no one wants to read that shit
Yeah IDGAF about the story, if I'm looking for a recipe, that doesn't mean I want to learn about some stranger's life. And if you are offended that I don't appreciate your recipe story - that's your problem. There are hundreds of similar recipes I can choose from and yours is only special to you. It's like being offended that others don't want to hear daily life stories about your kid - they may be your world, but no one cares.
Recipes can be art, but 9 out of 10 times, I don't care about the art of it. I just want something that tastes good and doesn't take too long to make. The tips and tricks that are relevant should just be an annotation at the relevant instruction.
It’s shocking how this has aged. Nowadays you would load the job posting into gpt with some previous resumes, hit go, and be done. Wild.
I never thought anyone would find anything good about the clutter on recipe sites, other than supporting the author by scrolling through the ads. I'm still not convinced. Give me the recipe and a few photos.
10:06 light rock music 🎶 😂
can recommend growing your own, after few years i now have unlimited amount of fresh garlic year round =]
i got 17 mins into the video until i HAD to look up "nebulous". Never heard that word before, its def going into my vocabulary though
this video is good, right up until instead of saying "acknowledging the creator/history of the recipes is good, too much fluff is bad" they moved the goal post and tried to gotcha Melissa by using illogical measurements and excluding instructions to put into a "tips and tricks" a tip is something that is not required for the recipe but makes it better. not including a whole chicken as an ingredient then neglecting to say how to prepare it in the instructions. and the added experts are like just being pretentious and not adding to her argument.
This did not actually adress the reason at all, there are a few reasons. First and formost because you cannot copyright just a recipe... Why? Because a recipe is considered a list of instructions and facts, which are not protected under copyright law. Thats right, you can legally copy every recipe under the sun and even distribute it and be legally in the clear if it is just the list of ingredients and instructions. Reason 2 is so you have to scroll passed a sea of ad's generating revenue. (And why pages seem to randomly reload, it's not your browser being dumb its javascript on a page forcing a reload to serve you more ad's) That's it, those are the reasons. We can pretend it's because it helps to see some exposition and or tips... it doesn't we all know it doesn't 99/100 times. Perhaps if you know absolutely nothing about cooking and if you see 'julienne some carrots" and don't know what that means maybe it could help... But let's be real that stuff isn't in there, it's some nearly always some idealized story about someones grandma (and increasingly some chat-gpt nonsense that is entirely fabricated) if you want to say that stuff... Say it after as proposed but you writers out there that really want to tell "the story" I challenge you to always read that section when you look up a recipe... You won't and you know it as well as I do.
BUUUGGGG🤓😂
3:25 The website condiments?
1:28 This feels like it would be great as an extension
I hope you realise that you guys are my mythbusters
This is a large ad
Don't use alarm to wake up. Use it to go to bed quicker. Also, your sleep will be better if you eat your last meal 3 hours before bedtime. Also, you have to be so much energetic in daytime so that you get tired for good sleep.
"Stuff you can't include in the recipe" just after an example with an overly ambiguous cut size that could be replaced by a precise term in the same amount of space. If there is such a crucial bit of information that make or break the recipe, put it where it matters, not in a multiple pages foreword. Also use content blockers to get rid of everything that is actively hindering your enjoyment of websites.
I think the compromise at the end was a good solution so everyone gets what they want. I do think the first website had its merits however, because even though I often do read the tips and tricks and the background, it would be nice to have an option with just the recipe if I've made that recipe a lot and have already read them. I also love using the jump to recipe button, especially when I'm trying to quickly see if I have the ingredients needed to make the recipe. I've seen a lot of recipe pages with the main recipe tips after the actual recipe and the general baking/cooking tips before it too. But mostly it's because of the ads that will constantly pop up on my screen if I even move the page after a certain amount of time, or randomly start playing video ads, and often times I can't even close the tiny ad players. Some recipe pages just have so much intrusive ad clutter it's ridiculous :( Great video! I definitely have a better understanding and appreciation of recipe websites now :D
I'm shocked that the fact that all the narrative stuff is the one part you can solidly say is your copyrighted work wasn't mentioned.
I disagree with monetization bit I love to share my recipes for free what should we gate keep our passed down cookie recipe from great great mee maw like the old days? Or how corporate does all the time naw let knowledge be free man and also support the teachers for sure maybe pictures or videos for extra monetization is the way to go Actually scratch the vids if I like a cook's recipes enough I'd buy a book or like a list of no ad recipes like get thinking people
Well, Sabrina's argument is analogous to viewers of answer in progress using 'Summarize with AI' instead of watching their videos.
Sorry, but this is one of the most disappointing AIP episodes ever. It is nothing but a shill for your sponsor.
because your not the same person you were 10 years ago. the past me definitly wasn't the best person but to hold the modern me accountable for his actions is basically like blaing an innocent person for the actions of the guilty. the past me is gone, they can't be held accountable anymore, move on
Bernadette Banner made a video about this a few years ago - now *that* would've been an interesting collab...
Huston I have a problem
I think the reply to this video reveals a larger reality: most people right now don't care to care about more people. I think it's the same thing we're learning with AI art. It's not about the artist or their message for mass audiences, it's about the image and what it means to us as the viewers. The story and the tips of the recipe are valuable, but not to someone who doesn't care and just sees these things as getting in the way of their convenience. At least at the scale of the internet, people are not here to care about people they haven't and never will personally connect with.
I'm sorry, I got distracted. I want the orange hoodie at 3:42. Ok, I'm going back to watching.
I’m a technical editor for airplane pilot training manuals. Correct punctuation is necessary because most ESL people know English rules better than native speakers. If I let poor punctuation get past me - the sentence can actually mean something different. That’s bad when lives are on the line.
You're not getting enough exercise.
Alright, I'm just going to say it now... If the story and the tips and tricks are "part of the recipe" then the recipe is wrong, poorly written, or incomplete. You can be the world's best writer, but the recipe bit is it's own technical writing specialty. A craft honed to give consistent results of a specific flavor and texture profile. The only things in a tips and tricks section that is valid is to compensate for things like elevation, or substitutions for ingredients that may be regionally difficult to get your hands on. I make a few chicken dishes that I developed, and when my sister wanted my recipe, and didn't get anywhere near the same results, that is when I realized that saying "cut chicken into strips" isn't enough. Because I did much larger thicker pieces, my cook time was longer, which made her thin strips over cooked when timed with everything else... So if the recipe section is subjective, it's just wrong. That being said, all of the creative writing fluff isn't nothing. A good story, written well, is great! It can add its own flavor and setting around a meal, and make an otherwise simple recipe seem more enticing. It should be the hook that gets me to try the same lemon chicken recipe listed on every other website. The writing portion ideally should be the show piece that attracts the audience... But the problem is that the audience is looking to feed the family, not spend a while day choosing a meal plan based on the fiction writing intro before I get to yet another plain Jane Caesar salad recipe. And it was bad enough when it was the same themes on 20 cancer stories loosely modified to fit the recipe, and the same 50 stock photos plastered on most recipes. Now we have AI slop writing these things, and AI generated art that isn't even possible to make with the recipe as written. At the end of the day, a free recipe downloaded from a website is just a mine field of potentially bad instructions that wastes food, wastes time, and makes everyone in the house angry. A $20-50 cook book with enough recipes to last the better part of a lifetime, full of easy to follow instructions that actually work... That price suddenly doesn't seem all that high. Sure, it lacks inspiration... But by the 2nd or 3rd time you repeat a meal in it you start to modify it to make it your own. It just provides a framework that works, and let's you go from there. There is just so little point to go trolling the web full of potential misery when books are just the superior format for cooking. I don't want that to be true... But that is just the state of things, and it's not getting better with time.
I get it, I can appreciate the background and the personal story of the person I asked to give me a recipe. But, and I mean this as respectfully as possible, I did not ask and I do not care. I get that to you this recipe is a story and a novel, but to me, I just need dinner. And when I'm cooking, this isn't about the person whose recipe I found somewhere, it's about me. I'll develop my own story and learn on my own, thanks. Literally no one visits recipe blogs for the blog part. If I want to read a story, I'll find a book. If I want to cook, I'll find a recipe. Simple as.
I found an amazing recipe for spaghetti squash that details the blogger's entire process of experimentation to determine which direction to slice the fruit before cooking it. I don't know why they don't lead with the recipe and follow with the cool story.
that is not bread!
youtube gave me an ad for Grammarly after the grammarly sponsor segment this is sick and twisted
I have learned that recipe writers are clearly up their own ass. No one is looking for a novel in their recipe. If you would like a novel with your curry, then the writers can put it at the end. I and most people are looking for ingredients and instructions. Im so happy that you love food blogs. Enjoy to your hearts content. The rest of us need to know how much peanut butter is necessary.
I love being a dress girlie since nearly all my dresses have big comfy pockets in them that let me carry whatever I want in them. My phone, pens and paper for writing, an apple for a snack, an entire water bottle to help me stay hydrated, whatever! I still carry a purse full of stuff too, but I’m just sort of packratty and enjoy having and using nice purses.
Going to sleep and waking up are never a problem. I just don’t want to get up. The bed is too warm and comfy. Even if I had the runaway clock, I’d probably just ignore it. What do you have for motivation?
I remember as like a 10 year old being annoyed that we hadn’t invented a plane that could withstand a gameboy in the year of our lord 2004
I would love a high contrast version instead of dark mode for apple.
